A Conference With No Logo: Building the HSWIL Volleyball Brand Identity
How Signal & Story turned a ten-team conference's constraints into a complete volleyball brand identity -- logo system, locked palette, and a 54-file brand kit -- on a fixed fee and a three-week clock.
HSWIL Volleyball Conference
Before
A ten-team conference with no logo -- a legacy tagline and a folder of mismatched tournament art
After
HSWIL -- a state-emblem mark, a locked palette, and a 54-file brand kit live on its own download site
This isn't a vendor case study. This is what happens when someone goes all-in on a business they believe in — and has the tools to back it up.
Seven disciplines. One partner.
Every aspect of Arize Training Club's transformation was delivered by Signal & Story.

Creative Direction & Color Strategy
Constraints turned into hard creative rails
A brand that could never accidentally look like someone else's. Ten member teams already owned colors, and two regional pro-sport combos (Packers green-and-yellow, Vikings purple-and-yellow) were instant credibility-killers. We mapped every claimed color, ruled five palettes off-limits, and walked into concepts with one recommended direction instead of a blank menu -- so the palette decision took a single conversation, not three rounds.

Primary Logo System
A state-emblem mark that reads as sport at a glance
The picture in Brooke's head, made real: Wisconsin and Illinois at equal weight, a motion volleyball cutting across the border, and the HSWIL wordmark running through the middle -- with "One Conference in Christ" locked into the lockup. It's legible at avatar size, holds up in a single color on a jersey, and looks like the most serious brand in the gym. The logo speaks for itself, exactly as the brief demanded.

Concept Review System
Three directions, reviewed without the email back-and-forth
Picking a logo usually means a week of vague email threads. Instead, we presented three concepts on a private web review portal -- each with what it does well and the one decision it asks the client to make -- and a built-in reply generator that turned Brooke's picks into a finished response in one click. She came back inside a day with clear, structured decisions instead of "I kind of like the second one."

AI-Accelerated Production
A pipeline that turns a sketch into a vector master
Behind the scenes, the mark was built through a production pipeline most studios don't have: AI image generation to explore silhouettes fast, an Adobe vectorize step that collapses the raster-to-SVG round-trip into a single pass, and a programmatic export build. The point isn't novelty -- it's that a flat-fee engagement could ship flagship-grade files because the slow parts were automated out of the way.

Programmatic export
Every format and size generated, not hand-cropped
Brand Kit & Exports
Every format the conference will actually use
Not one logo file -- a kit. Master art in PNG, SVG, and PDF, ready for print and screen. A single-color version simplified for embroidery, so the mark survives a needle and thread. Email-header and social exports sized for real placements, plus avatars and covers. The conference can hand this folder to any team, vendor, or decorator and never get the question "do you have this in another format?"

Brand Home & Live Portal
Delivery as a self-serve site, not a zip in an email
The whole engagement lived at hswil.signalnstory.com. During the sprint it was a live status portal -- phase, decisions, and commercials, always current. At delivery it flipped into a brand-kit home and download center: a one-click "download everything," file-by-file browsing, and the locked palette on display. Hosted on the conference's own subdomain, so the brand has a permanent home the moment it ships.

You don't need seven disciplines. You need the one that's costing you the most.
We don't run all seven plays for every client. We start where Arize started — with the single problem quietly draining the most time and money. We solve that first, then automate it so it stays solved. Tell us what yours is.
“Working with TC at Signal & Story was an excellent experience. He took my initial ideas for a logo and truly brought them to life in a way that exceeded my expectations. The final design is not only beautiful but also perfectly captures the feel and mission of our program and organization. He was patient, attentive, and always willing to help translate my thoughts into professional design language. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for thoughtful, high-quality design work.”
